Women’s Health and Wellness

At SAMA, we understand the challenges women face with menstrual and hormonal health.

From painful periods and irregular cycles to conditions like PCOS and thyroid disorders, our holistic approach addresses the root causes rather than just alleviating symptoms. With a blend of acupuncture, yoga, and nutritional guidance, we empower women on their journey to hormonal balance and overall well-being.

Period Pain (Dysmenorrhea)

Dysmenorrhea refers to painful menstrual periods caused by uterine contractions. Pain can be idiopathic or linked to conditions like endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic inflammation, fibroids, cervical stenosis, or irregular uterine shape. Some experience pain during menstruation, while others may have cramping days in advance.

At SAMA, we use acupuncture, moxibustion, and supportive therapies to alleviate menstrual pain and address underlying issues. We also provide yoga therapy and nutritional solutions to help ease and eliminate period pain.

Irregular Periods

Menstrual periods usually last four to seven days and occur about every 28 days. Irregularities can include:

  • Cycles shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days
  • Missing three or more consecutive periods
  • Significant changes in flow (heavier or lighter) or duration (over seven days)
  • Variations in cycle length exceeding nine days
  • Severe pain, cramping, nausea, or vomiting during periods
  • Bleeding or spotting between periods, after menopause, or post-intercourse
  • Soaking through tampons or pads within an hour

These issues may stem from conditions like thyroid disorders, fibroids, PCOS, or lifestyle factors such as stress and poor diet.

At SAMA, we focus on holistic treatments to address root causes, aiming to balance the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid, and ovaries through acupuncture, yoga, and healing diets for hormonal stability.

PCOS/PCOD

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects 1 in 10 women of childbearing age and is characterized by hormonal imbalances and metabolic issues. Common symptoms include missed or irregular periods, hair loss, excess hair growth, acne, weight gain, and mood swings. Causes can be genetic or related to obesity, particularly visceral fat, leading to insulin resistance and increased androgen production. Women with PCOS face a higher risk of diabetes, heart disease, infertility, and other health issues.

At SAMA, we support women with PCOS by focusing on reducing insulin resistance and androgen levels, and addressing inflammation through acupuncture, therapeutic yoga, and dietary plans.

Thyroid Disorders

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the neck that produces hormones regulating energy use, affecting breathing, heart rate, weight, digestion, and mood. Common thyroid conditions include:

  • Goiter: Enlargement of the thyroid
  • Hyperthyroidism: Excess hormone production
  • Hypothyroidism: Insufficient hormone production
  • Thyroiditis: Inflammation of the thyroid

The American Thyroid Association recommends Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies for managing these conditions. At SAMA Wellness, we provide comprehensive solutions to effectively address thyroid issues and their root causes.

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is the loss of bladder control, ranging from occasional leakage to a sudden urge that makes it hard to reach the toilet. Types include:

  • Stress Incontinence: Leakage during pressure, like coughing or exercising.
  • Urge Incontinence: Sudden urge followed by involuntary leakage, often with frequent urination.
  • Overflow Incontinence: Constant dribbling due to incomplete bladder emptying.
  • Functional Incontinence: Impairments prevent timely toilet access.
  • Mixed Incontinence: A combination of types, typically stress and urge.

At SAMA Wellness Clinic, we offer non-surgical solutions for urinary incontinence, including pelvic floor strengthening acupuncture, pelvic yoga, and physiotherapy to effectively manage this issue.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, often accompanied by fatigue, sleep issues, memory problems, and mood disturbances. It heightens pain sensitivity by altering how the brain and spinal cord process signals, significantly impacting quality of life. Key symptoms include:

  • Chronic, widespread pain (aching, burning, or throbbing)
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Muscle and joint stiffness
  • Tenderness to touch
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Cognitive difficulties (“fibro fog”)
  • Increased sensitivity to stimuli
  • Digestive issues

At SAMA, we provide treatments like acupuncture, electro acupressure, trigger point therapy, and myofascial release to alleviate pain and enhance mobility, helping you return to an active lifestyle.

Peri Menopause and Menopausal problems

Menopause, which typically occurs in the 40s or 50s, signifies the end of menstrual periods. While a natural process, it can bring physical symptoms like hot flashes and emotional changes that disrupt sleep, energy, and mood. Common concerns include:

  • Irregular periods
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Mood swings
  • Cognitive difficulties (“brain fog”)

At SAMA, we support you through this transition with regular acupuncture and other natural treatments to alleviate symptoms and improve sleep quality.
